This project is aimed to establish patient specific stem cell based in vitro model of chronic liver cirrhosis, the 10th leading cause of death for men and the 12th for women in the United States in 2001, killing about 27,000 people each year. The innovative approach of the proposed project engages the derivation of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, and differentiation of these cells into hepatic cells for therapeutic applications. Because these cells are from the patient himself/herself, these cells are not expected to induce immunorejections.
